Characterizing sets of jobs that admit optimal greedy-like algorithms

چکیده
The “ Priority Algorithm” is a model of computation introduced by Borodin, Nielsen and Rackoff [BNR03] which formulates a wide class of greedy algorithms. For an arbitrary set S of jobs, we are interested in whether or not there exists a priority algorithm that gains optimal profit on every subset of S. In the case where the jobs are all intervals, we characterize such sets S and give an efficient algorithm (when S is finite) for determining this. We show that in general, however, the problem is NP-hard.

On the Structure of Optimal Greedy Computation (for Job Scheduling)
We consider Priority Algorithm [BNR03] as a syntactic model of formulating the concept of greedy algorithm for Job Scheduling, and we study the computation of optimal priority algorithms. A Job Scheduling subproblem S is determined by a (possibly infinite) set of jobs, every finite subset of which potentially forms an input to a scheduling algorithm. An algorithm is optimal for S, if it gains o...
متن کاملOn the performance of greedy algorithms for energy minimization
We revisit the well-known greedy algorithm for scheduling independent jobs on parallel processors, with the objective of energy minimization. We assess the performance of the online version, as well as the performance of the offline version, which sorts the jobs by nonincreasing size before execution. We derive new approximation factors, as well as examples that show that these factors cannot b...
متن کاملOn Scheduling Algorithms for MapReduce Jobs in Heterogeneous Clouds with Budget Constraints
In this paper, we consider task-level scheduling algorithms with respect to budget constraints for a bag of MapReduce jobs on a set of provisioned heterogeneous (virtual) machines in cloud platforms. The heterogeneity is manifested in the popular ”pay-as-you-go” charging model where the service machines with different performance would have different service rates. We organize a bag of jobs as ...
متن کاملHeuristic and exact algorithms for Generalized Bin Covering Problem
In this paper, we study the Generalized Bin Covering problem. For this problem an exact algorithm is introduced which can nd optimal solution for small scale instances. To nd a solution near optimal for large scale instances, a heuristic algorithm has been proposed. By computational experiments, the eciency of the heuristic algorithm is assessed.
متن کاملEuclidean Greedy Drawings of Trees
Greedy embedding (or drawing) is a simple and efficient strategy to route messages in wireless sensor networks. For each sourcedestination pair of nodes s, t in a greedy embedding there is always a neighbor u of s that is closer to t according to some distance metric. The existence of Euclidean greedy embeddings in R is known for certain graph classes such as 3-connected planar graphs. We compl...
